Taking the Exam tomorrow

  • 1.  Taking the Exam tomorrow

    Hi everyone,

I'm taking my first exam tomorrow.  I've reviewed the textbook and have been taking the Quizlet practice tests.  I've scored 83% or higher on 5 exams...do you think this is sufficient to pass the 1st part?

    Thanks in advance,
    Shaun

I took the exam back in 2014.

From what I remember, the first module was the least difficult.

I think you may have enough to pass.

I prepared for them the same way.

I read the book for one week then took quizzes the night before and the exam.

    Bryan Case,

I took the quizzes at Quizlet.com.
Just Google Quizlet CDFM and you'll get some links.

This is a great question, Eszter! All passed CDFM exams are good for 4 years from the date they were passed, regardless of any exam updates. So, you will not need to retake your module 1 exam unless you do not complete the certification process within 4 years of the date you passed it. Also, I did want to mention that the exams can be taken in any order. If you have additional questions, do not hesitate to write back here, email us at certification@asmconline.org or call us at (703) 549-0360 and ask for the Certification Department.

That is correct, Rodger. Some individuals prefer to take and some group testing sessions offer all 3 exams in a single day, but this is not a CDFM Program requirement.

We strongly recommend that all CDFM candidates thoroughly review the CDFM Candidate Handbook to be fully informed about the certification and testing processes. The handbook can be obtained cost-free on the ASMC website at asmconline.org/cdfm/candidate-handbook/.

I took the exams back in 2010, and realizing the exam has changed since then, my advice may not be value-added.  But based on my many peers and what they advised; I took the first module (least stressful) and then I attended a CDFM Course "Management Concept" for a week (Company paid for registration, $1,000.00).  After that course, I scheduled my testing for all the remaining modules, for same day within that month.  So everything was still fresh and I was in the right mindset.  I passed each one, it was a long afternoon, but well worth the effort, little of no stress.

For those who have not yet had an opportunity to take the Enhanced Defense Financial Management Training Course (EDFMTC), here is one.  The Graduate School USA has just confirmed as a "GO" an EDFMTC class in their Washington DC Training Center, located at 600 Maryland Avenue S.W., Washington, DC 20024-2520.  The 5-day class will be conducted Monday - Friday, December 9-13, 2019.  To register, or for more information on this session, visit Graduate School USA | Graduate School (www.graduateschool.edu).  This course is probably the best way to prepare for your exams - all aspects of the CDFM material are discussed and provided to you in the course materials.

We still have 24 seats remaining in this December 9-13 EDFMTC session and it is Guaranteed to Go.  If you haven't had this training, please seriously consider taking the course before attempting to take exams.  Students who have taken this course consistently have higher exam scores and higher passing rates on the CDFM Exams.  Visit www.graduateschool.edu today and search for "EDFMTC" to get the details or register for the course.

    There's a new examination now...all mods are different...more likely
than not. Degree of difficulty, focus areas across the FM
    competencies.

My experience with taking the exams is the following.  Nothing is word for word from the text books so memorizing is not the ultimate answer.  What I came to realize as I tested through the modules is a need in understanding basic principles of budgeting, accounting, finance, financial policies, fiscal law, etc.  Using critical thought processing skills to work through presented scenarios on policies and/or procedures was very helpful.  Thinking your way through an issue presented was the main focal point of my tests.  If you understand common processes and financial rules, you are equipped to know what step comes when, who is the office of primary responsibility, which regulation covers a program, etc..  You will do fine!

I couldn't agree more with Alice. To that end, fundamental
understanding of the basics and subsequent application for solving
exam scenarios...and most importantly...real-time/on the job
    challenges.

Well said, Alice.  I agree with you 100%.  Rote memorization of a lot of detailed information isn't going to fully prepare one to pass the exams.  You need to understand the big picture. Knowledge of the overarching concepts and general rules of the FM competencies; being able to apply these to scenario driven situations will better prepare one to pass the exams.

    Hi Shaun,

We strongly urge candidates to use the CDFM exam blueprints ("exam specifications") to drive exam preparation. The exams may include questions that may not be found in the textbook, as the Subject Matter Experts used the blueprints and source documents (regulations), not the textbook, to guide item creation.

The blueprints can be found in the CDFM Candidate Handbook, which can be obtained here: asmconline.org/cdfm/candidate-handbook/. Additionally, we recommend thoroughly reviewing the "Step 2: Preparing for Examination" section of our website here: asmconline.org/cdfm/prep/.

I hope this information is helpful--feel free to reach out to us here or at (703) 549-0360 or certification@asmconline.org if you have additional questions. Good luck on your exam!

    Good evening,

I just got home from passing the module 1 exam and would like to provide my input.

    1. I do not think Quizlet is a good resource. Most decks significantly outdated.
    2. Reviewing the EDFMTC study guide alone is not sufficient preparation

Here is how I prepared for each topic (and there were still several questions I wasn't ready for). For background, I have 2.5 years of FM experience.

    Government Resource Management Environment:
    1. Only used the EDFMTC study guide (briefly looked at a few sections OMB Circular A-11, but it's too long and everything I read was already covered in the study guide)

    Manpower Management
    1. Reviewed EDFMTC study guide
    2. Read the section in OMB circular A-11 about FTE
    3. FM Online - Ethics 201 - Ethics for Supervisors

Enterprise Risk Management and Internal Controls
    1. Reviewed EDFMTC study guide
    2. FM Online - Managers Internal Control Program a Basic Awareness
    3. FM Online - Internal Control in Financial Management (or similar title, very useful course highly recommend)
    4. Read the entire GAO Green Book (not that long and I like the way it's written, again highly recommend)
    5. A few pages of OMB circular A-123 (couldn't get through it)
    6. Read FMFIA and FFMIA

    Fiscal Law
    1. Reviewed EDFMTC study guide
    2. FM Online - DoD Fiscal Law 101
    3. FM Online - DoD Fiscal Law 201
    4. FM Online - DoD Fiscal Law 301
    5. JAGU - Comptroller Accreditation and Fiscal Law Course

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to add to this by saying, I just completed the EDFMT course at Ft. Leonard Wood and it was a great course.  I have just over 2 years experience in Financial Management and the instructors, Kent and Rich, we able to not only present the material in a logical way but add life experiences that help to visualize what they were talking about.

Anyway, I am taking the Mod 1 exam on Thursday and appreciate the conversation about things to help prepare for the exams.

God Luck to all those taking the tests.

If you are taking the EDFMTC Course, I'd recommend scheduling your first exam no more than a week or two after the course.  That will give you some time to study your course materials in more detail prior to testing, which you need to do.  Don't wait too long though, as the decay rate on information you get from taking the course is fairly high.  After you've passed your first exam, schedule your subsequent exams for a week or two later to give yourself sufficient time to study the material for each remaining exam. Just taking the course and then sitting for the exams is probably not going prepare you adequately to pass, for most people.  I recommend spending 90% of your study time in the course textbook and the remaining 10% on external reference material.

Took the Mod 1 test yesterday.  I have no idea how many I got right or wrong but I passed.

Recommendations for studying are below.  These are just my thoughts.

    1.  NO index cards - knowing the day the Articles of Confederations were written will not help
    2.  I attended the EDFMT course and studied the text book only. KNOW THE TEXTBOOK. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.
    3.  READ the questions.  Make sure you understand what they are asking.  While reviewing my answers I corrected a few questions because of how the question was worded.  I am sure I would have failed if I did not do this.
    4.  I felt, while it is important to know the answer it is equally important to know why the other answers are wrong.

Thanks to Archway training and the EDFMT course they put on.  Great instructors and even better training.
