    Hello Everyone.
I am Nikunj Patel. Currently serving on the US Army (USARCENT) at SHAW AFB, SC as Budget Analyst.
    CDFM Vs DFMCP

DFMCP is a waste of time. Someone in DOD has created this program and made it mandatory so I did it.
I am DFMCP1 but I can pass all DFMPC3 or higher level its not that hard.

So for me there is no comparison.

    Clearly CDFM has more value.

Working on CGFM to go next level.

I live in the Fort Bragg, NC area. I am currently working as a Budget Analyst for the Reserve Command. The Study Group does not replace the need for individuals to take advantage of the EDFMT courses or any other resources available. It just provides one on one help to those who need that extra push.

    Hi Everyone,

I am Mike Dashler, but most of those close to me call me Dash.  I spent 24 years in the Air Force and retired in Feb 2016.  I began my career as a civil servant working at Eglin AFB in Florida.  I found an amazing opportunity half a year later and PCS'd to Yokota Air Base, Japan where I currently run the budget team for DFAS-Japan.  Outside of work, I love exploring Japan with my family, and am an avid golfer.  Hope everyone has a great 2018!

    Hello all!

I'm excited to see ASMC has launched a valuable tool to connect! Looking forward to getting to know other FM professionals.

I've been doing DoD FM since 2005. Started as an accounting co-op student and stayed with my agency after graduating in 2007. Earned an MBA in 2014 and CDFM in 2017. I've continued to advance in my career and currently prepare CFO statements and assist with the audit to sustain our clean opinion. Love working with our budget staff at HQ and OMB. Also work closely with our systems team to ensure our FM system is compliant.

I'm always looking to expand my knowledge and experience. Am considering either a CPA or a master's in data analytics as my next step. If anyone is considering the CDFM, feel free to contact me. I took all three exams in Dec 2017 and am happy to provide insight into my study plan!

    • My name is Yun-wen Chen
    • I am working for US Navy for almost three years
    • I love to cook and watch TV, but I a little do not like to study and read. I would try to spend time with family.
    • I would like to learn new things, however; sometimes I would like to be lazy and try to take care of myself.
    • I completed my initial DFMCP1 and try to strengthen my skills and more knowledgeable, and I try to get improve my shortages and make them will become my advantages. This program made us like a heaven and hope for entry level as an beginner. It depends on someone who would love to pursue more professional test bases is to become more professional and expert in the favor of professional career developmental areas, such as CDFM, CGFM, CPA, CIA and efc or go to under-graduated or graduated-school. These programs and exams are able to make you find out what you would like to do. Learning is not ending in life.   I am very pleasure to join ASMC membership. :)

Hello Everyone!  My name is Chris Mayfield. I am a former Naval Supply Officer who transitioned from active duty after 30 years of service.  I am somewhat new to the Defense Financial Management community because most of my active duty service was spent on the logistical side with a sprinkle of DoN financial management.  Since I transitioned from the Navy to civilian life, I have worked as a government contractor working in the financial management arena supporting USFF, PACFLT, and RESFOR by analyzing financial and logistics data providing detailed reports and recommendations to assist in executing and planning their budgets.  I work for a small, but dynamic, company named Ironclad Technology Services.

When I am not working in my second career, I am relaxing with my wife.  I enjoy hitting the streets or trails running to calm the mind.

I am not currently CDFM qualified, but plan to be soon.  I welcome any advice on studying for the exams.

I look forward to the interactions.

    Hello Chris,

Welcome to DoD FM -- I recently earned my CDFM-A and would be glad to offer any tips for studying.  Two options are:

    1. Purchase/or borrow the study the Enhanced Defense Financial Management Training books for each module (1-3; optional 4).
        - This is pretty much the longer more in-depth route as you'll need to read through each module which can be pretty time consuming.
        - I dedicated about 11 weeks to studying (4-5 days each week/2-3 hrs a day).
        - In addition to this, I made online flash cards to reinforce what I read -- to me this was the best way to review the material once I finished reading each chapter
        - This method definitely requires more discipline and time commitment, but I feel I was able to digest the material a lot better.

    2. Attend the EDFMT course (courses advertised on the ASMC website)
        - This is probably the most time efficient way of obtaining your CDFM (-A).
        - I didn't attend modules 1-3, but attended module 4 (acquisitions course)
        - This class is essentially crash course on everything over 4-5 days.  The instructor typically foot stomps all of the testable material which enables you to focus on those areas in your studying.
        - Again although this is the quicker way of prepping for the exam, I would say you may miss more of the depth of studying the material yourself but will also give you more ease of mind of knowing what will be tested on.

You can of course do both options--but I feel like just committing to one or the other would be sufficient.

I have flashcards available on Quizlet.com if you would like to reference them in your preparation.  Let me know if you have any questions!

Welcome Chris!  I also served the Navy 24 years active duty and been with the Army as an auditor and investigator for 7 years the month of my retirement.  The easiest and fastest way to get the DFMCP3 is to simply align all your graduate school credits with CDFM.  You will most likely get certified in a month or maybe less.

The program is a little tricky and challenging bi twit guidance from the experts, I am sure you will get this very quickly.

I apologize to Kat for taking me too long to have myself introduced to the group I've been busy for the past few weeks. I'm not really new to this group but rather a returning member after missing to renew my membership for a while. Anyway I'm a retired military member after serving 20 in the Navy. I took some college courses while still active in the Navy with concentration in Homeland Security. At first I had intention to continue my career in security and law enforcement but with a change of heart I switch to Accounting. I'm quite satisfied with my decision and continued to pursue further education in Financial/Accounting which after lots of hard work I successfully completed a Masters Degree in Accounting. Hope to see you in coming activities. Thank you in advance for your warm welcome...

    - Why Vader? I have no idea, it is an Air Force call-sign thing, and I suspect that the first rule of AF call-sign club is that you do not like your call-sign in AF call-sign club, and it represents your reality as poorly as possible (like why the guy being called 'tiny' probably isn't). Otoh, browncoat wouldn't be nearly as catchy.

A little about myself, retired after 24 years of active service in the Air Force 13 of those years performing Resource Advisor duties. I was lucky enough to get a Civil Service job at Eglin AFB working as a Resource Advisor for the 96th Communications Squadron. I just finished my academic qualifications for my level 1 Certification, and looking forward to learning more about Finance, Budget, and Acquisition.

    Hi All,

My name is Joe Ritter.  My background is different than most in this group.  I've worked in the IT field in the mainframe environment for 20 years before switching over to more of a process/auditing role.  My current assignment has me documenting the financial systems of the Army as a part of a BPS effort.  This is my first time dealing with the military and I felt that this certification and group could help me better understand the environment better.

In my personal life, I've been a Boy Scout leader for the past 16 years until moving to Indianapolis for this new assignment.  I enjoy hiking, baking, and home improvements.  I have two kids, both of which are out of the house.  My daughter is an Accountant and my son is finishing up his senior year at Wright State to become a mechanical engineer.

My super power is being able to utilize my past skills to my current job to help us standardize and automate very manual tasks.  They call me the "macro man".

    Roberta,

Great introduction.  Very impressive regarding your runner activities.  Once the "wheels wear out" and you can't run the marathons, I recommend golf. Great to see your interest in obtaining the CDFM and CDFM-A.  I encourage all non-CDFM DoD and USCG employee members of ASMC to apply via their chapter for our annual Elsie Steffany Memorial Scholarship Award, which basically funds training for and testing to obtain the CDFM.  Deadline for applications to chapter president or their designee is 31 December 2018.  Chapters will review and select the best application and send it (via our ASMC awards system) to ASMC National HQ for evaluation and selection by the Elsie Steffany Memorial Scholarship Award Committee as the scholarship winner to be recognized at National PDI. One winner will be selected.

Thank you for your contributions to our nation's security as a member of the defense financial management community.

    Hi Everyone!

My name is Christa Thorne and I'm a new member of the ASMC San Diego Chapter!
I'm currently a FIAR Analyst at Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (COMNAVSURFPAC) assisting with the command's internal controls and business processes in preparation for the annual financial audit.
I joined the ASMC because I wish to obtain my CDFM and gain more knowledge in the DoD.
Aside from that, I love living in San Diego and being close to the beach. It is one of my favorite escapes :) I also enjoy yoga, hiking, and being active outdoors.

Looking forward to being an active member and meeting new faces!

    Hello and Good Morning,

I am a new member to this community. Thank you to the members who reviewed my request and approved the application. I have been struggling with getting approved to formally participate in the FM learning program, so being apart of this organization feels like a big win.

A little about myself, I am a Marine in Okinawa filling the role of Resource Evaluation and Analysis Chief. I am also a candidate member with the Institute of Internal Auditors, and recently passed the first examination. It would be great to connect with anyone who is a CIA.

Thank you everyone for the opportunity to be a part of this community and I look forward to future engagement.

    Sincerely,

Welcome to ASMC, Felicia! To promote education, training and professional development in all aspects of military comptrollership; that's what ASMC is all about! I first joined in 1992, and have been active wherever in the world I've been. Philadelphia is a great Chapter and is always well represented at the PDI, our annual Professional Development Institute training conference. I presume you might be interested in obtaining your CDFM/CDFM-A Certification. Good luck. I highly recommend attending EDFMTC, it really helps to prep for the exams.

I joined ASMC last year, and recently passed my third of three exams for the CDFM! I took the week course, and it was helpful. The module 2 was tough for me, and you really have to understand fiscal law.
I transferred to the DoD from the IRS two years ago. I work in the Air Force cilivian pay team. I serve our local chapter a chair, Veterans committee. I'm always learning, and I love that. Technically I can retire in a year or two, but won't because I need the challenges from work. In my personal life, I have seven grandkiddos, play pickleball, volunteer as a child court advocatea, and speak Spanishh, (solo in poco). Encantada!

Hello ASMC members.  I am Doug Webster.  I retired from a 21 year career in the Air Force in 1993, where I was last on the staff of the Office of the Secretary of Defense.  We retired in the DC area and I now reside in Quantico, VA. The past 25 years have been either working in or consulting to the federal government in the areas of cost, performance, and risk.  Federal civilian time has included serving in Iraq with the Coalition Provisional Authority, as the deputy director of the DoD Business Transformation Agency, as the CFO of the US Dept. of Labor, and most recently as the Senate-confirmed CFO of the US Department of Education.

I am enjoying life in a semi-retired status, doing some consulting in Enterprise Risk Management, and in personal traveling.  I also enjoy writing, having recently published my 4th book, "Value-Based Management in Government." Given the blessing of free time, I am seeking to join the board of directors of the Pentagon Federal Credit Union, so if any of you are members, please vote online for me before the March 3, 2020 deadline! :)  I hope to again attend PDI this year.  If I am able to do so, I'd love to meet any of you who go.

    Welcome, Natalia!

We are delighted that you are planning to pursue the CDFM and wanted to let you know that although the exams are rigorous, which is part of the reason the CDFM is held in such high esteem, the Certification Team is here to provide support as you move through the process. Most candidates do succeed with substantial preparation and determination.

We strongly recommend using the exam specifications (blueprints), that can be found in the cost-free CDFM Candidate Handbook, to drive your preparation. And we offer a variety of additional preparation tools, such as the 5-day EDFMTC, the EDFMTC textbook, Module-specific Refresher courses, and as of just yesterday, a CDFM Practice Test!

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at certification@ascmonline.org if you have any questions.

    Hey There!

It is a pleasure to be apart of this group, I am Bryan Chappell!

I am an A1C stationed at MacDill AFB FL. I've been in for almost two years now (I know right, I am still a baby) and I plan to make the AF my career.

I love working with computers and writing programs. I've written two PS scripts that take user input to calculate a PCS travel voucher and another that only calculates TLE. I am working on a few other projects I am really excited about! Right now, my goal is to commission here in a few years (gotta wait until my 4 years and 1 day!) as I finish up my degree in Computer Science.

I am looking forward to working along side all of you! For now, take care and Happy Holidays!
